Marginalia opens beside a scene and shows information about it. Most of its sections concern the book as a whole rather than only the open document, which is what makes it useful while drafting: the beats and the numbers stay in view as the scene changes beneath them. The panel can be resized and closed.
Linked in this Scene
Every Codex entry the scene references, shown as a chip that can be removed, with a control to add more. Entries appear here both from tagging a name in the prose and from linking one by hand, because a tag in the text is itself the reference. The section is present in fiction projects, where there are Codex entries to link.
Story Beats
An ordered, numbered list of the book’s plot beats, each optionally tied to the scene in which it occurs. It is the book’s list rather than the scene’s, so the position of the open scene within the whole remains visible while it is being written. These are the same beats the Outliner displays.
Name Check
A manuscript’s invented names are precisely the words a spellchecker cannot help with: a book full of them turns the underlines into noise. The Codex already stores the correct spellings. Name Check compares the names in the open scene against those entries and reports the ones that do not match.
This is the error that survives a proofread, because both spellings look correct in isolation and only the pair is wrong. Nothing is corrected automatically. Each item offers two actions: apply the book’s spelling, or record that this one is intended. Some mismatches are deliberate, such as a character misspelling a name in a letter, or a second character whose name is deliberately similar.
Statistics
Figures for the whole book project rather than for the open scene alone.
Recent captures
The five most recent captures for the open document, so a recent change is visible without leaving the scene. The complete history, comparison and restore are in the book-wide Snapshots view.
The focus timer
A timer is pinned to the foot of the panel and renders against the same desk background the page is showing. It runs, pauses and resets, its duration is set from the control on the panel, and its state changes are announced to assistive technology.
