Compile typesets a manuscript into a finished EPUB and print PDF. It reads the document that was drafted, in the order set in the Binder, including front and end matter, so no export or re-import precedes it.
Pagination
Text is set and broken as a printed page is set and broken. Chapter openers reserve the drop the convention expects, running heads and folios are placed, and page breaks fall where typesetting requires rather than where a word processor happens to end a page.
Typefaces
More than 1,900 families from the Google Fonts library are available and are embedded in the exported file rather than referenced. Headings, body text and running heads may each be set in a different family. The browser fetches a family when it renders; the Mac and iPad apps cannot, so the twenty-nine families the built-in designs are set in ship inside the app, which is what makes a compile with no connection produce the same file. The licensing that permits embedding, including the 40 families whose licenses require a notice to travel with the file, is set out in the End User License Agreement.
Styles
Each compile style is presented as a rendered preview of the page it produces, so a style is chosen from its output rather than from its name.
Trim sizes and margins
US and UK print trim sizes, from mass market to large print, are provided with their margins and gutters, so page geometry does not have to be calculated against a given retailer’s specification.
Output
One manuscript produces both an EPUB and a print PDF, in formats accepted by Amazon KDP, Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books and Barnes & Noble. The files are written to your own device and open without Calamus.
Availability
Compile is part of the full version and is not included in the trial. On the Mac and iPad applications it runs on the device itself. The terms governing what a purchase covers are in the Terms of Service.
