No AI

No AI. Your words stay yours.

Calamus is a place to write your book, not a machine that writes it for you. There is no AI in Calamus: no generated prose, no “rewrite this paragraph,” no AI cover art, no chatbot in the margin. Every word in your manuscript is one you put there.

What “no AI” means here

Your own device

What about the AI tools on my own computer?

Some operating systems and browser extensions now offer their own writing tools. Calamus doesn’t add or switch on any of them. Features your device offers on its own, like Apple’s Writing Tools, autocorrect or a grammar extension you’ve installed, are controlled in your system or browser settings.

Support

A person answers every ticket.

Calamus is made by two people, and when you write to us, one of us writes back. There’s no chatbot, no AI-written reply, no canned answer pretending to be help. Every reply to your support ticket is written by a human who has read your message.

The only automatic emails you’ll get from us are notices: confirmation that we have your ticket, an email carrying our reply, a note when a ticket is marked resolved, and account emails such as receipts and password resets. None of them answers your question. That part is always a person.

Why

Why we built it this way.

Writers are being asked to hand their unpublished work to systems that learn from it. We think your book should be yours from the first word to the printed page, without your having to read the fine print to find out whether it still is.

Our promise

If that ever changes, you hear first.

If we ever consider adding an AI feature, we’ll tell you before it ships, it will be off unless you turn it on, and your writing will never be used to train anything.

Questions

Questions writers ask.

Does Calamus check spelling?
Yes. Calamus uses the spelling checker built into your browser or your Mac or iPad, and you can turn it off. Name Check also flags character and place names spelled differently from your World Building entries, and it only suggests. It never changes your text.
Can I take my books with me?
Yes. Compile makes PDF, EPUB and DOCX files. Settings, then Backups, exports every project as a .zip with your manuscript in Word, PDF and Markdown, plus your outline, notes and a full backup file.
Where can I read the details?
See our Privacy Policy, Terms and Security pages.
